The Jewish Digital Cultural Recovery Project (JDCRP) Foundation is hiring a Communications Officer, with starting date as soon as possible, for a limited contract through December 2024, with the option of extension, depending on funding availability.

The Jewish Digital Cultural Recovery Project Foundation, founded in 2019 by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) and the Commission for Art Recovery (CAR), is based in Berlin, Germany. The foundation is creating and populating a central scalable digital data repository for archival source material on the cultural plunder conducted during the National Socialist regime. In addition to the data repository, the JDCRP digital platform includes research and education projects that demonstrate the use of archival material in reconstructing the theft, as well as recalling the lives and cultural contributions of European pre-WWII Jewry. State-of-the-art technology is supporting the development of cross-archival links and improved search capabilities across various databases on objects, owners, and perpetrators, thereby revealing for the first time the full scope of the plunder. The archival project uniquely targets both specialists and the general public.

The Communications Officer will play a crucial role in enhancing JDCRP’s visibility and in engagement with the public, media, and stakeholders. By developing and implementing a strategic communication and social media outreach strategy, the Communications Officer will support JDCRP establish itself as a central go-to digital platform for archival information on cultural plunder during 1933-1945.

The foundation is supervised by its Board of Trustees and its activities are managed by its Executive Board.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an effective communication and social media outreach strategy, in close collaboration with the Executive Board and foundation staff.
  • Coordinate and execute communication activities, including preparation of communication materials, event organization, and website coordination.
  • Build and maintain a distribution list of journalists and media representatives, focusing on issues relevant to JDCRP’s mission.
  • Produce high-quality internal and external communication materials, such as press releases, newsletters, and reports.
  • Create content and build viewership for JDCRP social media channels.
  • Support the board in maintaining communication with the Board of Trustees and partner organizations, producing relevant communication materials and reports.
  • Handle media inquiries, arrange interviews, and maintain effective relationships with journalists.
  • Support the production and dissemination of publicity materials and respond to inquiries from the public and media in coordination with the JDCRP board.
  • Develop content and support the maintenance of content on the foundation’s website.
  • Coordinate communications for foundation events and support event planning and execution, ensuring alignment with JDCRP’s communication strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in a communications role, preferably within an NGO or a related sector.
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with social media management and content creation desirable.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and manage relationships with multiple stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in desktop publishing software (e.g., Canva, Figma, InDesign/Photoshop) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with content management systems and social media platforms.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field desirable. 
  • Knowledge of cultural affairs, provenance research, and issues of Holocaust memory.
  • Bi-lingual English/German language skills desirable, minimum requirement is native-level English or German writing skills, with English preferred. French language fluency is helpful.
